What is an Ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan is a safe, painless imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time pictures of the inside of your body.
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it a widely used imaging tool for people of all ages, including during pregnancy.
What happens during an ultrasound?
During the examination, a sonographer applies a water-based gel to the skin and gently moves a small handheld probe over the area being assessed. The probe sends sound waves into the body and receives the echoes that bounce back, allowing detailed images of organs, muscles, blood vessels, and other tissues to be displayed instantly on a screen.
Most ultrasound scans take between 15 and 45 minutes, involve no radiation, and allow you to return to your normal activities immediately afterwards.
