What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a quick, safe, and non-invasive imaging test that measures bone mineral density. Considered the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis, it helps assess bone strength and fracture risk.
Unlike a standard X-ray, a DEXA scan can accurately measure the mineral content of your bones, allowing for the early detection and monitoring of bone loss.
What happens during a DEXA scan?
During the scan, you will lie comfortably on a padded table while a scanning arm passes slowly over your body. The procedure is painless, requires no injections, and you can remain fully clothed in most cases, provided clothing is free from metal fasteners.
The scan typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on the area being examined.

Will there be a cost?
There is a fee for DEXA scans. For eligible patients who have a valid Medicare referral and meet the Medicare criteria for a rebated bone density scan, Medicare will reimburse the applicable benefit directly into the bank account nominated with Medicare.
Patients are required to pay for the scan at the time of their appointment, with the rebate processed by Medicare after the service has been provided.
